Matt Smith Leaving Doctor Who in 2013 Christmas Special

It has been announced that Matt Smith will leave Doctor Who in this year's Christmas Special.

He said: "Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show.
"I'm incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day, to realise all the elements of the show and deliver Doctor Who to the audience.
"Many of them have become good friends and I'm incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years."

Smith also paid tribute to the programme's producer, Steven Moffat, whose "varied, funny, mind bending and brilliant scripts has been one of the greatest and most rewarding challenges of my career".
He said: "It's been a privilege and a treat to work with Steven, he's a good friend and will continue to shape a brilliant world for the Doctor.
"The fans of Doctor Who around the world are unlike any other; they dress up, shout louder, know more about the history of the show (and speculate more about the future of the show) in a way that I've never seen before, your dedication is truly remarkable.
"Thank you so very much for supporting my incarnation of the Time Lord, number Eleven, who I might add is not done yet, I'm back for the 50th anniversary and the Christmas special."

We do not yet know who is replacing Smith, however we know that JLC will stay on through Series 8.

Steven Moffat has said: "Every day, on every episode, in every set of rushes, Matt Smith surprised me: the way he'd turn a line, or spin on his heels, or make something funny, or out of nowhere make me cry, I just never knew what was coming next.

"The Doctor can be clown and hero, often at the same time, and Matt rose to both challenges magnificently.

"And even better than that, given the pressures of this extraordinary show,he is one of the nicest and hardest-working people I have ever had the privilege of knowing.

"Whatever we threw at him - sometimes literally - his behaviour was always worthy of the Doctor.
"But great actors always know when it's time for the curtain call, so this Christmas prepare for your hearts to break, as we say goodbye to number Eleven. Thank you Matt - bow ties were never cooler.
"Of course, this isn't the end of the story, because now the search begins. Somewhere out there right now - all unknowing, just going about their business - is someone who's about to become the Doctor.
"A life is going to change, and Doctor Who will be born all over again. After 50 years, that's still so exciting."

Steven Moffat also commented to Doctor Who Magazine that "Somewhere out there right now - all unknowing - is someone who is going to become the Doctor...", which implies that the 12th Doctor has not yet been cast.

There will be further comments by JLC and a special video from Matt Smith released tomorrow.

The things I would like to see in Mat Smith's regeneration....

1) Not all over emotional like David Tennant's

2) Outside of the TARDIS

3) A Sudden ending, with little warning

4) A good storyline and reason why he regenerates (Sacrifices himself for Clara)

5) A special (or specials 50 / XMAS) that wraps up everything from the 11th doctor (Including the TARDIS form the lodger :D )

The TARDIS from the Lodger is pretty well explained - it was the Silence's "attempt to build a TARDIS" which was located under Florida in 1969. After River Song murdered most of the Silents inside, the machine attempted to evacuate and crash landed on top of Craig's house, where it tried to assimilate humans to pilot it back to the Silence homeworld, wherever it is.

The fact that Moffat and Jenna Louise Coleman will both still be in the show and only Matt is leaving will make for an excellent "mid-story outside the TARDIS" death without having to leave the conclusion to the next producer - like Logopolis/Castrovalva - the regeneration from Four to Five was amazing in terms of connecting the through line of the new Doctor with the same companions. I would even like a "Watcher" type plot where we see 12 helping the Doctor at the beginning of the special and somehow causing his own regeneration in a timey whimey way, in true Moffatt form.

I would like someone else besides Steven Moffat to choose the 12th Doctor, since Moffat is leaving Doctor Who himself after the 8th series why should we have to live with his choice into the future considering his tenure as show runner left a lot to be desired?

I say have a reverse regeneration for one series 8 and bring David Tennant back so the 12th Doctor is of the new show runner's choosing for series 9.

It would be nice if for that one series they would bring a widowed Martha Jones back (sorry Mickey), who now has a son more important to her than the Doctor.

I'm sorry, I must have missed it. When exactly was it announced that Moffat is leaving after series 8?
