Arthur Darvill Unofficially Confirms Rory Williams' Departure from Doctor Who

It's the end, but the moment isn't prepared for.
Although speculation has long suggested an end for Rory Williams after Series 6, actor Arthur Darvill has only just acknowledged these rumours in relation to his upcoming Globe Theatre role. An interview with Nick Curtis for the London Evening Standard reveals how Arthur might have let slip his character's departure.
Moffat, understandably, hates leaks and spoilers from a show dependent on suspense. Darvill won't tell me if Amy is or isn't pregnant (the Tardis's scanners currently indicate both). He won't say if there are Daleks or Cybermen in the forthcoming episodes. The biggest plot clue comes when our conversation turns to his forthcoming role in Doctor Faustus at Shakespeare's Globe.
I realise Darvill has been talking about his Doctor Who character in the past tense: "Getting a part like Rory was great, but now, coming out of it, I need to go and do something completely different."
Awkward nurse.
Rory has already been killed, reincarnated and reanimated several times, but have the writers finally done away with him for good? Darvill looks cornered, and clams up.
Of course, because Rory and Amy are married, it's likely that Karen Gillan will also leave the series. No surprise there. Let's just hope that Moffat doesn't kill off Rory for good; give him the wife and kid, for goodness' sake. After all these deaths, he deserves a life.

The rest of the conversation was split between Doctor Who and Arthur's role in Doctor Faustus. But for more about Arthur's upcoming theatrical performance, read the full interview from the London Evening Standard.
"We aren't really action types, and we are all fairly clumsy - me and Matt more than Karen. Give one of us a sword and you see the whole crew duck. . . .
"We break the Tardis all the time. Me and Matt are always pulling levers off the control panel or handles off doors." . . .
All three of the twentysomething stars grew up during the show's off-air years in the Nineties.
Awkward hero!
Darvill thinks this is a good thing. "Because it's a British institution we knew about Tardises and Daleks," he says, "so the worst thing was feeling the pressure of its history. But with Stephen writing the show and Matt as the Doctor it felt as if we were… not reinventing it, but pushing it forward."
But the weirdest comment of the interview came unexpectedly.
"I've started collecting taxidermy: I've got a red squirrel, called Steve.
Uh . . .
"I made sure he came with certificates so we know he wasn't just killed for stuffing. I go to the Natural History Museum and look at the cage of stuffed starlings there. But my favourite thing is the big blue whale. The scale of it is unbelievable, and makes you feel how insignificant you are as a human being." Darvill smiles. "I'd kind of like to live in one."
So Arthur Darvill is both clumsy and a little bit creepy, and his departure from Doctor Who will be sorely missed. At least he'll get more time to spend with Steve.

Many are understandably in denial about this piece of news, but companions often leave, and we have to respect the forward momentum in Arthur Darvill's evolving career. His schedule in the Globe Theatre play does more than suggest that Rory will not return for Series 7, if only because Arthur will be terribly busy during the series' rigorous filming schedule. This interview honestly says nothing new, except to confirm what most Whovians already suspected: after two years, it's time to let go of Amy and Rory.

UPDATE: This Tumblr user made me laugh, by the way.

They BOTH could be leaving, that would make more sense than just Rory. Maye 11's gettin' some new crew members.

Well, of course, except I completely forgot to mention that. Added.

Aww I'm quite happy really :) I'd like to see a new companion in the TARDIS and the whole 'OMG ITS BIGGER ON THE INSIDE!' again :)

I'd really love to see Arthur Darvill in Doctor Faustus. Mephistopheles is a brilliant character, and I'm sure he'll be phenomenal. Once again, I wish I lived in the UK.

Rory and Amy have been good, but I'm ready to see them both go and get new a TARDIS companion, maybe two, now.

The H2G2 Arthur Dent played by Darvill push starts here!

Rory and Amy are the first companions in New Who that I have actually cared about as characters. Companions come and go, but for the first time since Sarah Jane, I think I will actually miss them when they are gone.

He WOULD play a good Arthur Dent . . .

@David, that's a very good point. I guess we've gotten emotionally invested in the characters; even though I could say that (for instance) Martha was probably a better companion than Amy, I didn't care about Martha leaving. Amy and Rory going will actually be a blow to Doctor Who, and probably to the Doctor's emotional stability.

I quite like both Amy and Rory but I'd like to see a new companion. I hope River will stay longer though - I want to see the Doctor know everything about River and River be the clueless one.

Martha was a great, tragic character who was tossed aside. The tragedy of her character, ironically, was that she was the rebound after Rose. Who, is a relatively one dimensional character despite the "love affair" many fans had with her. I wouldn't want to see Amy & Rory go on indefinitely, but both will leave a mark on the show, Rory specifically for being a significant male companion, something Who has seen very little of since, well, Jaime or Ian.

Man! That's sad. If he leaves, really, I'll miss him. I don't want to pass this again, but, well...

They need to bring a really cool new companion. :D

Amy and Rory remind me of Ben and Polly, who are unfortunately not well remembered. I always liked them. They acted as surrogates for the viewer (that's what companions are for after all), the Doctor was an older, wiser alien capable of teaching them something.

Someone must have liked this post. At the time of writing this, it's had nearly 2000 page views, bringing us to an all-time high of 456 people on the blog at once.

NO MORE RORY?!?! :( :( oh well. companions leave. No more Amy and Rory... i'm going to miss them as I've always missed every companion. I just hope they leave on a good note like Amy being pregnant.

the Evening Standard is a london based newspaper, and isnt on the same level as the sun, so chances are this is correct!

Time for a companion who is not from the early 21st century I think.

I think all the Whovians on tumblr flocking to your page may have something to do with that, 10thPlanet :D
