Canadian SPACE Channel Buys First Rights to Air ''Torchwood: Miracle Day''

"The last death on Planet Earth was recorded . . ."
In the United States Torchwood's latest series airs July 8th, as this teaser confirmed; meanwhile, on the other side of the border, Canada's resident Whoniverse broadcaster, the SPACE channel, has bought the rights to air all ten parts of "Miracle Day" in the maple leaf country. Of course, SPACE hasn't made an official announcement, but media site C21Media has confirmed the veracity of this story.

The BBC itself has yet to even speculate which of its channels with broadcast Torchwood or how soon it will play each episode after America's Starz channel gets its chance. We can presume that the BBC will seek a Saturday airing, but the series may be too raunchy or violent even for a post-Wastershed audience.

Time Out Doctor Who Issue

Published on 20/04/2011 is Time Out London Issue 2123. Inside the magazine they interview the stars of Doctor Who series 6, preview the series and there is an exclusive interview with Steven Moffat.

Whats more there are six (count them) different covers too! You can buy all six different covers here for £20.

If you buy this issue, we are looking for high res scans of the Doctor Who pages, a friend tells me its available in London (of course) but there is usually a copy at railway stations which have a London bound stop (eg Grantham). I have tried before and you can't buy this in my home town :(

Typos fixed, Time Out can't spell Steven Moffat, and I used cut and paste (DOH!), foolishly assuming they could :)

Don't Forget to Read the Doctor Who Radio Times Preview

The Radio Times has already posted a snippit of the magazine's Doctor Who preview online; but don't forget that we've already got full scans of everything important. In any case, if you'd prefer a text-based summary, here's Steven Moffat's introduction to preview you can read in high resolution just by following the above link.
"Ah, it's that time of year again. If you close your eyes and wish your hardest, you can just about hear them - the Tardis engines grinding in the sky. The Doctor is coming back.
"When last seen, he tumbled down a chimney on Christmas Eve and saved a bad man's soul, but darker days now lie ahead for the last of the Time Lords. The Silence, the unseen enemy who blew up his Tardis last year, have laid deeper plans and set the deadliest trap of all - one that has been ticking away in the Doctor's life for longer than anyone knows.
"Newlyweds Amy and Rory are caught up in a century-spanning scheme, and somewhere out there, in a storm-lashed prison, River Song is getting ready to tell the Doctor something that will change his life for ever.
"By Lake Silencio, on the Plain of Sighs, a story will begin and end. A good man is going to die, an impossible life will begin, and our heroes will set out on the long road to the deadliest secret in the universe - and when it stares you in the face, you might just discover you've known about it all along.
"This year Doctor Who happens twice. Seven episodes now, a cliffhanger that changes everything, then six more episodes after the summer. But that's not all that is changing. Last year was a rollercoaster: Matt Smith's amazing new Doctor came bursting out of the Tardis and tried every ride in the funfair - except one. It's time to step aboard the ghost train.
"Welcome to new monsters, new terrors and Doctor Who season six. Hold tight!"
Yet just in this introduction we can dig out an excellent hint at the mid-series finale.
"By Lake Silencio, on the Plain of Sighs, a story will begin and end."
Lake Silencio? I feel as though there's a message in there. Probably something like Silence Will Fall; or, you know, not. Anyway, take advantage of our scans as well as all the other speculation, analysis, and news features we've been posting over the past few days.

Amazing Facts About Doctor Who That May Not Be True - Colin Baker

Doctor Who's David Tennant Stands Tall and Epic in a Movie Poster for ''Fright Night'' [UPDATED]

David Tennant as Peter Vincent. Click for a much larger image.
A new movie poster for the film Fright Night, starring David Tennant, has been released. And it is glorious. It's possible this is a fake poster, but judging from the quality and the unique image of Tennant, I'd have to say that if it is a fake, it's a well-crafted one.

UPDATE: As it turns out, this poster is a fake. As I said above, it's quite well-crafted, but we've been informed that this faux-posted was made by DeviantArt user Seduff. In any case, it's quite impressive and post-worthy anyway!

Steven Moffat Discusses Ending Infamy with the Doctor Who Mid-Series Finale

Issue 433 of Doctor Who Magazine deserves a place in your hypothetical collection for so many reasons—the collectors' covers, the interviews, the preview of Series 6—but not least of all is Steven Moffat's tantalizing hints at the mid-series finale.
"If you take someone like the Doctor and really piss him off, if you set yourself up to go to war with the Doctor, what would happen? Obviously you’d lose, it would be a massive, crushing defeat, but what side of the Doctor does it bring out? He’s actually quite capable of being really unpleasant to people. Of course he is. He’s a man like anyone else. If you treated Amy with extraordinary cruelty, how long would you live after that?"
"There’s an ongoing thing that the Doctor has become far more famous than he ever intended to be. Well, you would, if you’d done all those things in one lifetime. My God, people would start to notice you. You would be some incredible legend. We’ve started to play with this idea – which I remember Russell [T Davies] was so keen to avoid in the first series – with Chris Eccleston – of the Doctor being this great and famous hero, even though that’s not what he intended to be. He never wanted to be that. But you can’t avoid it.
"If the Doctor is dealing with life forms that he’s defeated on multiple occasions, it’s not like they haven’t noticed. It’s not like they haven’t written it down. You are going to be able to stand up at Stonehenge and say ‘Who’s first? Look at the score sheet, and take your best shot.’ It’s going to happen. At the same time, he can’t keep doing that. It could be quite damaging for the show. So it’s something that I’m bringing to a head, and kind of ending."
Moffat is, at the very least, addressing an imposing trouble with the Doctor of the New Series, but "ending" his infamy—how is that possible? After we learned what the Silence do, the obvious and perhaps correct assumption is that, as per an old Series 5 rumor, the Doctor's greatest enemies may entirely forget him, or likewise he might forget who they are, what they do, and how to stop his greatest threats. Could this somehow relate to Roman Rory facing a legion of Cybermen?

Doctor Who's David Tennant Features on Stamps from the Royal Mail

Stamp collecting just became a brilliant hobby. As of today, first class stamps featuring David Tennant as Hamlet in, of course, Hamlet are issued in the UK, celebrating fifty years of Royal Shakespeare Company productions.

A spokesman for the RSC describes the challenge undertaken.
"It has been an almost impossible job to sift through 50 years of performances to choose images which represent the extraordinary range of work we have produced. I hope people will enjoy what they see and join us in the future."
Source credit goes to the Mirror, which has a gallery of non-Who-related performances featured on these stamps.

Read io9's Spoiler-Free Review of the Doctor Who Series 6 Opener

Among all of the spoiler-free reviews available right now, io9's was particularly embracing and fresh, having just been written after the stateside premiere. These are some pieces from the review, which is conveniently broken apart.
Here are some of the awesome things you're going to be flipping your fez over as the new season begins.
Rory Williams, played by Arthur Darvill, actually surprised io9.
We're happy to report that Rory hasn't regressed in his journey — he's still the valiant husband (who waited 2,000 years for his love). He's becoming a strong character in his own right, and he's still delivering lines we only wish someone would say to us one day.
The relationship between Matt's Doctor and River Song is heating up.
The first two episodes crank up the heat on these time travelers and their moebius-strip relationship. They start with the occasional eyebrow lift, close talk and flirtatious playground name calling, and before you know it you're craving the next round of Doctor/River banter.
The new series has some big twists ahead—and so does the year 2013.
Big game-changing characters and stories are introduced, and everyone is put through Hell — and that's just in the first two episodes. The crowd tried to coax a few more details out of writer and show producer Steven Moffat, but he stayed mum. He did, however, give us a lot of anxiety about the much whispered about 50th anniversary — by not saying anything at all. When the brain behind Doctor Whogoes silent, you know he's keeping quiet about something big.
If you've never seen Doctor Who—Why are you here?—this isn't the best season at which to start.
If you're hoping to introduce a Doctor Who virgin to The Doctor this year, you may want to start with a different season. While highly entertaining and fulfilling, the first two episodes would be all but impossible for a newcomer to pick up on.
There's still time for the occasion break for levity.
. . . While you may need to know a thing or two about last season's dangling plotlines, Matt Smith is going to make you laugh. He's still got that Time Lord quality that demands both your respect and your laughter.

Doctor Who's Georgia Moffett and David Tennant Are Parents, If You Didn't Know

After the exciting news of Georgia Moffett pushing a buggy, David Tennant has taken up his share of the burden both as Time Lord and buggy pusher. Their newborn daughter Olive is certainly fortunate to have these two.

The Doctor Who Series 6 Stateside Screening — Reba Baskett's Gallery of NYC and the TARDIS Team

Arriving in style.
Following her massive, professional-quality gallery of photographs from last Friday's Barnes & Noble signing, designer and photographer Reba Baskett attended the New York City screening of "The Impossible Astronaut" and "Day of the Moon".
"In order to get into the showing I ended up spending 23.5 hours on the New York sidewalks along with other fans that wanted the first glimpse of the new season.
"Monday morning the people in line got a WONDERFUL surprise. The cast brought us doughnuts. I got my picture taken with Matt and Karen. I also had my picture taken with Arthur but it ended up being blurry. We were all so happy they came out and spent some time with us. (I will post the pictures of me and Matt and Karen when I get them from the people who took them). I had met the cast on Friday but did not get pictures with them so I was so excited and the energy from that lasted through the afternoon until the cast arrived about 6:45ish.
What I will say is that the episodes are two best episodes that I have ever seen. They are scary — very scary. The new villain is very scary. The first scenes of episode one will leave you with your mouth dangling open going “WHAT” right till the end of episode two where you are going “OMG WHAT WHAT WHAT”!!!!!! I am so excited for this upcoming season — I think it will be the best season so far.
Surely many of our readers fortunate enough to attend, including reviewer David Thorp, can attest to how brilliant the episodes were. Nevertheless, Reba Baskett's true gift to the Whovian community is her extensive gallery of high-quality photographs of the event, from standing in line to the Q&A. Live the experience; view the gallery.

Here were some of our favorite pictures.
Arthur and Alex: what a comparison!
A great answer to a great question.
Contemplating handsomely, as always.
Karen gets stumped, and Matt gets distracted.
Put that on the Radio Times.
Dozens of other pictures—count them—simply couldn't fit onto this post. Also, that would be stealing. And stealing is bad. Usually. So see Reba Baskett's full gallery of photographs from the Series 6 screening.

Doctor Who Scan — ''Futurama'' Crossover

For its regular Twin Dilemma Tuesday double feature, Who Fix (specifically here and here) posted some rather unusual scans of a crossover between Doctor Who and the futuristic US cartoon comedy Futurama. As though there weren't enough jokes about Daleks and stairs . . .

No doubt "EX-COM-MU-NI-CATE!" should have been in "Parting of the Ways".

Doctor Who Character Cards Revealed Crucial ''Impossible Astronaut'' Spoilers

This is what happened to the images.
Character cards for Doctor Who Series 6 "The Impossible Astronaut" have been released, and they both confirm and reveal some huge—and by "huge" I mean enormousspoilers.

Major correction: However, shortly after posting these card collections, we and a host of other sites were contacted by the BBC. That's almost never good, but they were kind and understanding.
These images are owned by the BBC and by BBC Magazines and relate to episodes that have not yet been broadcast. The card was not intended for public release yet because we're keen not to spoil the upcoming episodes for Doctor Who fans, but a technical issue that we're investigating means that some DW fans were made aware of it in a Google Alert overnight and are now circulating the images without our permission.
We are delighted that your site users are so interested in the trading cards - we hoped that they would really appeal to big fans of the show. However, we are keen that these don't spoil the surprise of the next season's episodes for other fans and so we're taking steps today to track down and prevent unauthorised uses of our images.

Naturally, we felt obliged to remove the cards, so there should be no trace left of them here. While this blog should always be considered a spoiler, we tread carefully. Though we attempt to be comprehensive, sometimes a necessary roadblock steps in the way to preserve the exciting twists and turns for which we love Doctor Who.

We will nevertheless reference some speculation that was confirmed by the cards, the speculation that we and our readers were, after all, able to piece together from trailers and interviews and plain old logic. But we won't blatantly point out what's confirmed and what isn't. It just goes to show that you should always check this site daily; you'll probably miss something mistakenly unauthorised that we have to quickly delete. It's just your luck and the frequency with which you visit us!

These all came from io9 and were pointed out to us by Bobbi. So now you know who to blame.

Why Life, Doctor Who, and Combom Has Been Redesigned At Last

Change is good. Usually.
If you're a frequent visitor—or guest or reader or whatever else you'd prefer to be called—of this blog, you've probably noticed a couple of fundamental changes to the way in which we operate. Well, we're happy to say that most of those changes, if not all, are aesthetic and made purely for convenience.

I promise I won't ramble as long as I did last time, but Team Combom wanted to explain what this is all about. Last week we surrendered our old Blogspot domain for combom.co.uk, something you might want to bookmark. Our reasons were simple: more freedom as a blog and accessibility for our readers. Last night, however, we embarked on an experiment that a sizable minority of our readership will not receive well.

If you haven't noticed, we added a second sidebar. But . . . why? Wasn't one good enough? Isn't that simpler, fitting in better with our minimalist design? Over the past few months especially, we've stuggled to limit the expansion of our irritating singular sidebar, which on the right side of the screen grew like a weed that slowed loading time and cluttered the blog space.

Our ultimate aim with this redesign is to more logically organize the essential features, widgets, and news of this blog. On the left we mostly have tools you can use and enjoy, while on the right we've assembled the community aspects of this blog: the Chatango, the Shoutbox, the Contact Form, and submissions to our daily Amazing Fact, all the features that embody our relationship with you, however close or negligible.

Change is good, no matter how hard that is to believe. Over time we'll adjust and grow and keep making the sort of subtle alterations that won't slam you in the face when you open up to this site. And grow we shall: did anyone else notice that we surpassed 700 followers? This is a work in progress, so we welcome any constructive criticism about this design and how we can maximize the reading experience. But, please, no comments about how we've just ruined the Internet or caused a Glennpocalypse.

So enjoy, or not. Above us, tell us what you think—in a civilized manner, please.

Radio Times Confirms Doctor Who Schedule and Broadcast Time for April 23rd

Alleviating speculation about the broadcast time for "The Impossible Astronaut", the Radio Times—full Doctor Who scans here—has confirmed when on April 23rd the sixth series begins. At 6:00 P.M. on BBC One and BBC HD, "The Impossible Astronaut" airs, a particularly early time slot for a series that will be increasingly dark.

As the Doctor Who News Page explains, the earliest time slot for Series 5 was "The Vampires of Venice" at 6:30. This time slot is likely a product of the subsequent programme, So You Think You Can Dance, which begins at 6:45 and ends at 8:00. "The Impossible Astronaut" is also sandwiched behind the new game show Don't Scare the Hare.
[This episode of So You Think You Can Dance] is the fifth in the series, which last week achieved 3.4 million viewers in its 6.30 timeslot.
ITV1 will be showing March of the Dinosaurs, a Feature-length CGI adventure from the makers of Walking with Dinosaurs, telling the story of an epic migration undertaken by a herd of dinosaurs in the high arctic 70 million years ago.
BBC Two has the 1964 Beatles film, A Hard Day's Night, Channel 4 is showing Come Dine with Me and Channel Five the 1959 film Ben Hur.
The direct consequence of this time slot is the inevitable placement of Doctor Who Confidential, airing on BBC Three, which—as many international readers may be unaware—only starts its programming at 7:00 every night. A whole fifteen minutes without Doctor Who! Can we survive it? Confidential might not; the News Page adds that the last gap between the parent series and its behind-the-scenes feature resulted in a 40% drop in ratings.

Will an earlier time slot lower or raise the ratings for "The Impossible Astronaut"? As always, we'll have the episode for free, international streaming for the benefit of those who can't get it in their home country.

The Doctor Who Bar Launch Party

The Doctor Who Bar will open at 5.30pm instead of 6pm, where we will discuss the approaching season opener. After the episode has finished join us back in the Bar to discuss the events & happenings of that very first episode!

So join them from 4pm to watch A Christmas Carol at 4-15pm, Matt Smith's first Christmas Special! Then join us later on for the Launch Party, at 5.30pm!

And don't forget the Live Tweet on the BBC3 repeat of The Impossible Astronaut, usually around 7pm, time to be confirmed.

Doctor Who Of The Day - River Song

In The Big Bang, River Song said she once went out with a Nestene duplicate who had swappable heads.
